Annual Blood Work
Our pets age at a more rapid rate than we do, which means potentially hazardous health issues can seemingly show up without warning and be catastrophic to your pet’s overall health.
That is why the Kodiak Veterinary Clinic recommends annual blood testing as part of our Preventative Annual Wellness plans (PAW Plans). Your pet’s physical examination along with these simple blood tests can create a baseline measure of your pets vital organ function.
For Adult Pets (1-6 years of age)
We recommend an Adult Health Profile which checks your pet's kidney and liver functions and glucose (blood sugar) levels. This vital information allows your Veterinarian to monitor your pet for early recognition of Kidney or Liver Disease, Infectious Diseases, and Diabetes. Kidney and Liver Disease develop slowly over time and symptoms do not appear until the Disease has already progressed to an advanced stage. By recognizing trends with your pet's blood work, your Veterinarian can help you ensure that your pet lives a longer, happier, and healthier lifestyle.
For Senior Pets (7+ years of age)
We recommend a Senior Health Profile which checks additional kidney and liver functions, endocrine and pancreatic systems, blood proteins, and calcium levels. This vitally important information helps your Veterinarian with early recognition of potentially serious health conditions such as Diabetes, Pancreatitis, Kidney or Liver Disease, Infectious Diseases, and certain types of Tumors. Unfortunately, several of these conditions develop slowly over time with symptoms appearing only once the Disease has reached an advanced stage. With early detection, your Veterinarian can develop a Treatment Plan that can help your pet live a longer, happier, and healthier lifestyle.
Other Annual Blood Tests
As in human medicine, some drug therapies require annual blood testing to ensure the overall health of the patient during treatment. These blood tests allow your Veterinarian the ability to monitor the effectiveness of therapy, while ensuring that the treatment is not causing additional concerns for the patient.
This test is used to check the effects from use of Non-Steroidal-Anti-Inflammatory therapies commonly prescribed for the treatment of arthritis inflammation and pain. This test is required annually for long term treatment.
This test is used to monitor the treatment of thyroid issues, so that therapeutic drug levels can be adjusted to meet the individual dosage needs of the patient. This test is required annually for long term treatment.
Phenobarb Level Test
This test is used to monitor the treatment of seizure activity, so that therapeutic drug levels can be adjusted to meet the individual dosage needs of the patient. This test is required annually for long term treatment.
